Furnace problems we fix

Most no-heat calls trace back to airflow, ignition or a safety switch. We test each one and show you what failed.

  • Blowing cold air

A clogged filter, dirty flame sensor or failed igniter.

  • Short cycling

Overheating from poor airflow, a bad limit switch or an oversized furnace.

  • Burners light, then shut off

Usually a dirty flame sensor or a venting problem.

  • Nothing happens at all

Thermostat, power, door switch or control board.

  • Loud bangs or squeals

Delayed ignition, a worn inducer or blower motor.

  • Carbon monoxide alarm

Leave the house, call 911 or PG&E, and do not run the furnace until it is inspected.

What a furnace repair visit includes

We check the thermostat, filter, ignition, flame sensor, safety switches, venting and blower, then tell you what failed and why.

You get a written price for the repair before we start. If the furnace is near the end of its life, we tell you that too, and we price the repair and the replacement side by side so you can choose.

Replacing a furnace in Oakland needs a permit. See what an Oakland furnace permit involves.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

The most common causes are a clogged filter that makes the furnace overheat and shut the burners off, a dirty flame sensor, or a failed igniter. Check that the thermostat is on Heat with the fan on Auto, then replace the filter. If it still blows cold, book a repair.

Why does my furnace turn on and off every few minutes?

That is short cycling. It usually comes from restricted airflow, a failing limit switch, a dirty flame sensor or a furnace that is too large for the house.

How often should a furnace filter be changed?

Check it monthly during heating season. Most 1-inch filters need changing every 1 to 3 months.

Can I still replace my gas furnace with a new gas furnace?

Yes, until January 1, 2029. From that date, Bay Area Air District rules allow only zero-NOx furnaces, such as heat pumps, to be sold or installed.

Do you give a price before the work starts?

Yes. You get a written price after the diagnosis and before any repair starts.
